How to Take a Photo and Find It Again in the Gallery
Tom is 72. He grows roses in his back garden. One sunny morning, a rose opened in a deep red colour, the best he had grown in years. He wanted a photo to send to his brother. He opened the camera, took a photo, and smiled. Later that day, he wanted to show the photo to his wife. He opened his phone and could not find it. He looked in messages. He looked in his email. He looked at his home screen. The photo seemed to have vanished.
Tom had not lost the photo. He was just looking in the wrong places. On a Galaxy phone, photos taken with the camera are kept in one main place: the Gallery. The Gallery is like a photo album on your phone. Every photo you take goes there, newest first. Once you know how to open the Gallery, and how to spot the newest photo, finding a photo becomes easy.
This guide shows you how to take a photo with care, and how to find it again in the Gallery. It also shows you how to look at a photo full screen, how to share it with one person, and how to delete a photo you do not want. You do not need to learn editing. You do not need to learn filters. You only need a few taps, done slowly.
Before you start, find two app pictures on your phone. The first is Camera. It often looks like a small camera. The second is Gallery. It often looks like a small flower, or a stack of photos, depending on your phone. The pictures may look a little different on your model. The names under them matter more than the exact picture. Look for the words Camera and Gallery under the icons.
Step by step: take a photo
- Open the Camera app. Find the word Camera on your home screen or in your apps list. Tap it once. The camera screen will open. You will see what the back camera sees. If you see your own face, the front camera is on. Look for a small icon with two curved arrows, which switches between the front and back cameras. Tap it once to switch to the back camera for a photo of a garden, a room, or another person.
- Hold the phone steady with both hands. Hold the phone with both hands, like holding a small book. Keep your fingers away from the small camera lens at the top back of the phone. Breathe out slowly. Stand still for a moment. A steady hold makes a clear photo. A shaky hold makes a blurry photo.
- Point the phone at what you want to photograph. Move the phone slowly until the thing you want is in the middle of the screen. Check the edges of the screen. Is anything cut off that you wanted to include? Is a finger in the corner? Move a little to the left or right until the picture looks right. Take your time. The rose will wait.
- Tap the screen to focus, if you need to. Tap once on the main thing in the picture, such as the rose, or a person's face. A small circle or square may appear where you tapped. That tells the camera to make that part sharp. Wait half a second. The picture should look clear on the screen.
- Tap the big round button to take the photo. At the bottom of the camera screen, look for a large round white button. That is the shutter button. Tap it once, gently. Do not hold it down. The phone will take the photo. You may hear a soft click sound, and you may see a tiny flash of the picture you just took in a small corner of the screen.
- Take one more photo, just in case. It is normal for the first photo to be a little blurry or a little dark. Take a second photo from the same spot. Take a third if you like. You can delete the extra ones later. It is better to have two or three tries than to wish you had taken one more.
- Check the photo at once. Tap the small thumbnail picture in the corner of the camera screen. That thumbnail shows the photo you just took. It will open full screen. Look at it closely. Is it clear? Is the light good? If it is blurry, go back to the camera and try again while you are still in the same place.
Step by step: find the photo in the Gallery
- Close the camera and open Gallery. Go back to your home screen. Find the word Gallery. Tap it. The Gallery will open. You will see many small photos in rows. These are your photos, kept in date order.
- Look at the top of the list first. The newest photos are usually at the top, or at the end of the list, depending on how your Gallery is set. On most phones, the newest photo is the first one you see when you open Gallery. Look for the rose, or the face, you just photographed. It should be near the top.
- Tap the photo to see it full screen. Tap the small photo once. It will fill the screen. You can now see it large. Swipe left or right with one finger to move to the next photo or the last photo. Swipe slowly. Each swipe moves one photo.
- Look in Albums if you cannot see it. At the bottom or top of the Gallery screen, look for the word Albums. Tap Albums. You will see groups of photos with names. Look for a group that sounds like Camera, or that shows recent photos. Tap that group. Your new photo should be inside it. Albums are just folders that keep similar photos together.
- Use search if the Gallery offers it. Some Gallery apps have a small magnifying glass picture, or a search box, at the top. Tap it. Type a word such as rose, garden, or the name of a place, if your phone offers that kind of search. If search does not find it, go back to the main list and look by date. Searching by date is the most reliable way when you know when you took the photo.
Step by step: share one photo, and delete one photo you do not want
- Open the photo full screen in Gallery. Find the photo you want, as above. Tap it so it fills the screen. Stop there. Do not tap other buttons yet.
- Look for the Share picture. Look for an icon that looks like three dots joined by lines, or the word Share. The icon is often at the bottom of the screen. Tap it. A list of apps and people will appear. Tap the name of the person you want to send it to, or tap the messaging app you normally use. Then send it in the normal way you send a message. Send only one photo at first, until you feel sure.
- To delete a photo, look for the bin picture. Open the photo full screen. Look for an icon that looks like a rubbish bin, or the word Delete. Tap it. The phone may ask, are you sure? Tap Delete again to confirm. The photo will move to a bin or trash area for a while, in case you change your mind. It will not vanish at once on most phones. If you delete by mistake, look in the Gallery for a bin or trash group and restore it from there.
A small practice: Tom and the red rose
Tom practised the next morning. He went to the garden with his phone. He opened Camera. He held the phone with both hands. He tapped the rose on the screen to focus. He took three photos. He tapped the small thumbnail in the corner. The second photo was the clearest. The first was a little blurry. The third was too dark, because his shadow fell on the rose.
Tom then opened Gallery. His three rose photos were at the top of the list. He tapped the clearest one. He showed it full screen to his wife. Then he shared that one photo with his brother, using the Share picture. His brother replied the same morning. Tom deleted the blurry first photo. He kept the clear one. That evening, he opened Gallery again and found the photo in seconds. He no longer feared that his photos had vanished.
You can practise with something simple at home. Photograph a cup on your kitchen table. Take three photos. Open Gallery. Find the newest one. Show it full screen. Then delete the worst one. Doing it with a cup, when nothing matters, makes it easy when the moment matters, such as a grandchild's birthday or a flower that blooms for one day only.
Common mistakes
- Looking for the photo in messages or email. A new photo goes to the Gallery first. It does not go to messages by itself. Open Gallery before you look anywhere else.
- Covering the camera lens with a finger. A finger over the lens makes a dark or blurry corner. Check where your fingers are before you tap the shutter button. Move them to the edges of the phone.
- Holding the shutter button down for a long time. A long hold can take many photos at once, or start a video on some phones. Tap the round button once, gently, and let go.
- Deleting the only good photo by mistake. Check the photo full screen before you delete anything. Look at it large. If you are unsure, do not delete it yet. You can delete it later, when you have time to check again.
- Sharing every photo at once. Sending ten similar photos can confuse the person who receives them. Pick the clearest one. Share that one only. Keep the rest in your Gallery.
- Photographing with the front camera by accident. If you see your own face when you wanted the garden, you are on the front camera. Tap the switch icon with two curved arrows to change to the back camera, then take the photo again.
Frequently asked questions
Where do my photos go when I take them?
They go to the Gallery app. The Gallery keeps them in date order, newest first on most phones. You do not need to save them anywhere else. Open Gallery, look at the top of the list, and your newest photo should be there.
Why is my photo blurry?
The phone may have moved while you took the photo, or the camera may have focused on the wrong thing. Hold the phone with both hands. Tap the main thing on the screen to focus on it. Stand still. Take a second photo. A little patience helps more than tapping faster.
Can I get a deleted photo back?
Sometimes, yes. Deleted photos often stay in a bin or trash area inside Gallery for a while. Open Gallery, look for a group called Trash, Bin, or Recycle bin, and look for your photo there. If you find it, look for a Restore choice. If the bin is empty, or a long time has passed, the photo may be gone for good. Ask a trusted person for help if you cannot find the bin.
How do I take a photo of myself or with friends?
Use the front camera. Open Camera, then tap the switch icon with two curved arrows to see your own face on the screen. Hold the phone at arm's length, or ask someone else to hold it. Tap the big round button. Check the photo at once, while everyone is still together, so you can take it again if someone blinked.
Why can I not see a photo I took yesterday?
Check the date order in Gallery. Scroll down slowly. The photo may be further down the list than you expect. Check Albums too, and look in the Camera group. If you took the photo in a different app, such as a messaging app camera, it may be saved in a different album. Look for an album with that app's name.
If the words on your screen look different
Camera and Gallery apps can look a little different from one Galaxy phone to another. One phone may call the photo store Gallery. Another may show a slightly different icon for Gallery, such as a flower or a stack of pictures. The Share icon may look like three dots joined by lines on one phone and show the word Share on another. The delete icon may be a bin on one phone and the word Delete on another. The switch between front and back cameras may sit at the top on one model and at the bottom on another.
These small differences do not change the main idea. Photos you take go to Gallery. The newest photo is near the top of the list. Albums group photos together. If you cannot find a word, open Settings and use the search box at the top to type Gallery or Camera. The search can help you find the app settings for your model. Differences can come from your model, your region, your carrier, and your One UI version, which may be One UI 8, One UI 8.5, or One UI 9. Look for the picture and the meaning of the word, and ask a trusted person to sit with you the first time if the screen looks unfamiliar.
