How to Make Text Bigger on Your Samsung Galaxy
Rosa is 67 years old. She loves getting messages from her daughter Maria. Maria writes about Sunday lunch, about the grandchildren, and about the weather. Rosa wants to read every word. But the words on her phone look small. She has to squint. She sometimes holds the phone far away. Then she holds it close. Her eyes get tired. She does not want to ask Maria for help every time. She wants to read the messages on her own.
If that sounds like you, this guide is for you. You can make the words on your Samsung Galaxy phone bigger. You do not need a new phone. You do not need to buy anything. You only need to change one setting. It takes about two minutes. You can change it back at any time. Nothing will be lost. Your photos, your messages, and your contacts will stay just as they are.
Making the text bigger changes the size of the words in menus and in many apps. It can make messages easier to read. It can make the names in your contacts easier to see. It can make the words in Settings easier to read too. It does not make your photos bigger. It does not make the buttons on your screen bigger in every app. But for reading, it helps a lot. Many people find one step bigger is enough. Some people like two steps bigger. You can try, look, and then decide. There is no right size. The right size is the size that feels easy for your eyes.
Before you start, sit somewhere with good light. Put your glasses on if you use glasses. Make sure your phone has some battery. You do not need to be in a hurry. Read one step. Do that step. Then read the next step. If you tap the wrong thing, do not worry. You can tap the back arrow at the bottom of the screen. That will take you back one screen. You can start again. No harm is done by looking around in Settings.
Make the text bigger, step by step
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. Look at the words on your screen as you go.
- Find the Settings app on your phone. It looks like a small gear wheel. Tap it once to open it. If you cannot find it, swipe down from the top of the screen with one finger, then look for the small gear icon near the top. Tap that gear icon.
- In Settings, look for the word Display. Tap Display. This is the place where you change how the screen looks. On some Galaxy phones, you may need to scroll down a little to see Display. Scroll slowly with one finger.
- On the Display screen, look for Font size and style. Tap it. The full path is Settings > Display > Font size and style. Say those words slowly to yourself as you tap. Settings, then Display, then Font size and style.
- You will see a slider. A slider is a line with a small circle on it. You will also see some sample words. Drag the circle to the right with your finger to make the text bigger. Drag it only a little at first. Watch the sample words. They will get bigger as you move the circle.
- Stop when the sample words look easy to read. Do not drag the circle all the way to the end at first. The largest size can look very big. It can push words onto the next line. It can make menus look crowded. Start in the middle, or one step to the right of the middle. You can always make it bigger later.
- Look for a switch that says Bold font. A switch looks like a small button you can turn on and off. If the words still look thin or pale, turn Bold font on. Tap the switch once. The sample words should look thicker and darker. For many people, bold words are easier to read. If you do not like it, tap the switch again to turn it off.
- Now leave Settings. Tap the back arrow, or tap the Home button at the bottom of the screen. Open your Messages app. Open a message from someone you know. Read it. Are the words easier to see now? Try a second app, such as your contacts list. Look at the names. Are they easier to read?
- If the text is still too small, go back to Settings > Display > Font size and style. Drag the slider one more small step to the right. Check again. If the text is now too big, go back and drag the slider one small step to the left. Small changes are best. Change, check, and change again if you need to.
That is all. You have changed the text size. The change stays on your phone. You do not need to save it. You do not need to press a save button. When you close Settings, the new size stays. If you restart your phone later, the size will still be there. If a family member uses your phone and says the text looks too big, you can show them this guide. They can help you move the slider back. Or you can move it back yourself, using the same steps.
If you cannot find Display in Settings, use the search box. At the top of the Settings screen, there is a search box. Tap it. Type the words Font size. Your phone will show you the right setting. Tap the result that says Font size and style. This search trick works for many settings. It is faster than scrolling and looking. Remember it for later guides too.
Try it slowly: read Maria's message with Rosa
Let us practise with Rosa. Rosa opens her Messages app. She finds a message from Maria. Maria wrote: "Mum, lunch is at one o'clock on Sunday. Please bring the salad. Love, Maria." Before Rosa changed the setting, she had to squint to read that message. The words looked small and grey. She read it twice. She was not sure if lunch was at one o'clock or at eleven o'clock. That matters. She did not want to arrive at the wrong time.
Rosa follows the steps above. She opens Settings. She taps Display. She taps Font size and style. She drags the slider one step to the right. She turns on Bold font. She goes back to the message. Now the words are clear. She can see "one o'clock" without squinting. She can see "salad" without guessing. She smiles. She writes back to Maria: "Thank you. I will be there at one. I will bring the salad."
Now try the same practice yourself. Pick one message you have already read. Read it before you change the setting. Notice which words are hard to see. Then change the setting by one step. Go back to the same message. Read it again. Is it easier? Write down how it feels. If it is easier, keep that size for a day. Use your phone as normal. Read messages. Look at names. Check the time. At the end of the day, ask yourself: were my eyes less tired? If yes, that size is good for you. If the words still feel small in the evening light, move the slider one more step tomorrow. There is no rush. Your eyes will tell you what is right.
Try reading in two places. Read a message indoors, in good light. Then read a message near a window, in bright light. Words can look different in bright light. A size that is fine indoors may feel small outside. That is normal. Pick a size that works in both places, if you can. If you wear reading glasses, try the new size with your glasses on. That is how you will use the phone most days. Do not judge the size without your glasses if you normally wear them.
Common mistakes
- Dragging the slider all the way to the largest size at once. The words become very big. Menus look crowded. Buttons may move. Start with one small step to the right. Check a message. Then decide if you need more.
- Turning on Bold font and thinking it made the text bigger. Bold makes words thicker and darker. It does not make them much taller. Use the slider for size. Use Bold only if thicker words help your eyes. You can use one, or both, or neither.
- Looking for the setting in the wrong app. Font size is in Settings, not in the Messages app. Do not look for it inside a message. Open Settings first, then Display, then Font size and style. If you are lost, use the search box at the top of Settings.
- Forgetting to check a real message after the change. The sample words on the settings screen are only a preview. Open a real message and a real contact name. That is the true test. If the sample looks fine but messages still feel small, move the slider one more step.
- Thinking bigger text will make photos or videos bigger. It will not. Photos stay the same size. Videos stay the same size. Only words change size. If you want a photo bigger, open the photo and spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in. That is a different action.
- Giving up after one try because the first size feels wrong. The first size is often not the best size. Try one step, live with it for a few hours, then try again. Your eyes need time to get used to a new size. Small, slow changes work best.
Frequently asked questions
Will making the text bigger delete anything from my phone?
No. Changing the font size will not delete photos, messages, contacts, or apps. It only changes how big the words look. Your files stay safe. You can change the size back at any time with the same steps.
Will bigger text use more battery?
No, not in a way you will notice. Font size does not drain the battery like a bright screen or a long video does. If your battery runs low, the cause is almost always something else, such as screen brightness or many apps running. Do not worry about battery when you change text size.
Can I make only the text in messages bigger, and leave everything else small?
Not with this setting. The Font size and style setting changes text in many places on the phone at once. That is why it is simple. If you only want bigger text in one app, that app may have its own setting. But for most people, changing the phone setting is the easiest way. Try it for a day and see if you like it everywhere.
What if the words still look pale, even when they are bigger?
Try turning on Bold font in the same place: Settings > Display > Font size and style. Bold words look thicker. Also check that you are in good light. If the screen looks dim, you may need more screen brightness. Brightness is a different setting, on the Display screen. For now, try Bold first. It helps many people.
How do I go back to the normal size?
Go back to Settings > Display > Font size and style. Drag the slider back to the middle, or to the place it was before. Turn Bold font off if you turned it on. Check a message. When the words look like they did before, you are back to normal. You can change the size as often as you like. There is no limit.
Will this change the size of the keyboard letters?
The keyboard may look a little different, but the keys do not always get much bigger. The font size setting mainly changes words you read. If typing feels hard because the keys are small, that is a separate problem. Ask a family member to help you look at keyboard settings, or use voice typing to speak your message instead of typing it. Do not press hard on the keys. A light tap is enough.
If the words on your screen look different
Menu words may look a little different on your phone. That is normal. Samsung makes many Galaxy models. Some are A-series phones. Some are S-series phones. They do not all show the exact same words. Your phone company, called a carrier, can also change some words. Your country or region can change words too. And your One UI version matters. In October 2026, some phones use One UI 8, some use One UI 8.5, and some use One UI 9, depending on the model and the region. No one version is "the" version for every phone.
If you do not see the word Display, or you do not see Font size and style, do not panic. Open Settings. Look at the top of the screen. Tap the search box. Type Font size. Tap the result that matches. That will take you to the right place, even if the menu words on your phone are a little different. If the search shows more than one result, pick the one that mentions Font size and style. Take your time. The search box is your friend. Use it whenever a guide word does not match your screen exactly.
